Since 1992, we've been the local partner for organizations bringing meetings, conferences, and incentive programs to Detroit. Venues, transportation, offsite events, and everything in between.
Special D Events sits on both sides of this transaction. When our national clients take a program to another city, we're the ones vetting and hiring the local DMC. Then we come home and serve as one.
That dual perspective shapes how we work. We’ve seen what a great DMC does when a bus breaks down at 7:15 for a 7:30 departure. We’ve also seen the proposals that look beautiful and fall apart two days before the event. We know which questions matter, because we ask them of other DMCs all the time.
Hire us for a Detroit program and you’re not getting a vendor who hopes you don’t notice the gaps. You’re getting a partner who has been the client, and responds accordingly.
In practice, we’re venue agnostic. We don’t own venues, so we have no stake in where your program lands. We recommend the space that actually meets your event goals. You get one named project manager from proposal to load-out, contingency plans written before you ask, and a team that’s onsite rather than on call.

A destination management company provides local expertise and on-the-ground execution for meetings, conferences, and corporate events: venue sourcing, transportation, offsite events, activities, staffing, and the logistics connecting them.
Put simply: your planner owns the program. Your DMC owns the city. We’re one of the few firms that does both.
Take the whole program or just the pieces you need. Most clients start with transportation and offsite events, then add from there.
Not sure which pieces you need? That's the conversation we're best at.
Tell Us About Your ProgramWe gather people with intention. Every program we design centers on the participants in the room, creating experiences that mean something to them and results your organization can measure.
Even on a logistics-heavy program, we start with why you're gathering, not the venue. Four phases, one point of contact, and you'll know who's responsible for what before you sign anything.
We start with the objective, not the venue. Who's attending, what needs to happen in the room, and what the budget actually has to cover.
Venue options, transportation plans, and experience concepts with real pricing. You meet the project manager who'll run it, not just the person selling it.
Supplier contracts, production timelines, transportation manifests, staffing plans, and contingency docs. All shared, none hidden.
Our team is in Detroit, in the venue, and on the radio. After the last bus rolls, you get a reconciliation and a debrief.
Detroit has quietly become one of the better value plays in the meetings business: big-city amenities, a walkable downtown, and a food scene that's been collecting national attention for a decade. Skeptical attendees tend to leave as advocates.
DTW runs 1,100+ daily flights to four continents, and J.D. Power ranks it among North America’s best mega airports.
Michelin arrived in Detroit, and Afar and others keep adding the city to their lists.
Recent host to the NFL Draft, major conventions, and international business gatherings.
Home to the world’s first convention and visitors bureau, with a hospitality community that still acts like it.
The catch: Detroit rewards local knowledge more than most cities. The best venues aren't always the obvious ones.
Learn what Detroit offers as a destination →When Siemens brought Realize LIVE to Huntington Place, more than 3,000 attendees needed a multi-day conference to run without seams. Siemens and production partner InVision owned the program. We owned Detroit: venue operations across multiple departments and labor teams, supplier sourcing, and onsite management through installation, event days, and teardown.
We vetted roughly 50 suppliers and landed on 17 local partners for the final program, then kept that network aligned as plans shifted. Local musicians, student performers, and Detroit-born activations went into the attendee experience, so the week felt like it belonged to the city rather than to any convention center. Siemens and InVision had one Detroit contact for all of it.
Some of these were one-time engagements. That's the nature of destination management, and it's exactly why the first impression has to be the right one.
I felt supported by a great team with a wealth of expertise. I could count the things that could have gone wrong, that didn't, because we had Special D Events on our side.
I'm always in awe of your ability to see through the fog of details to create a first-class event.
Major kudos for the ability to make the last-minute adjustments. A direct reflection of you and your team's expertise.
Plenty of clients hire us for the whole program, not just the destination. Here's the rest of what we do.

Watch the videoA DMC provides local expertise and on-the-ground execution for events in a specific city or region: venue sourcing and contracting, ground transportation, offsite events and dine-arounds, tours and activities, entertainment, décor, staffing, and the logistics that connect them. In Detroit, Special D Events handles all of it as a single accountable partner.
An event planner owns your program: agenda, content, budget, registration, and the overall experience. A DMC owns the destination: local venues, suppliers, transportation, and experiences. Many organizations hire both. Special D Events does both, so you can hire us for the full program or strictly as your Detroit partner.
DMCs typically price with a management fee plus supplier costs, or a marked-up program price. What actually drives the number isn’t the DMC pricing structure, it’s the scope of the program itself. Group size, number of days, and moving pieces such as offsites, transportation, or entertainment all hit your bottom line. The best way to get a true sense of your program’s costs is through a quick conversation with us.
No. We’re a national meeting and event planning agency that has produced programs in all 50 states. Detroit is where we’re the local expert and serve as a DMC. Everywhere else, we’re your planning agency, and we hire and manage the local DMC on your behalf.
ADMEI is the Association of Destination Management Executives International. Its certification requires a DMC to meet standards for operational excellence, financial stability, insurance, and client satisfaction. It’s one of the few objective credentials in an industry where anyone can print a business card. Special D Events is ADMEI-certified with a Destination Management Certified Professional (DMCP) on staff.
For a multi-day program with transportation and offsite events, six to twelve months is comfortable. Detroit’s best venues and motorcoach inventory book up around major events. That said, we’ve built full programs in six weeks. If your timeline is tight, tell us and we’ll be honest about what’s still possible.
Yes. We work throughout Southeast Michigan, including Dearborn, Ann Arbor, Birmingham, and Royal Oak, and across the state.
